Groping For Words - a comedy by Sue Townsend
Thursday 15th - Saturday 17th March 2012
Curtain up 8pm.

The plot is straightforward enough. Well-meaning, middle-class Mrs Chalmers starts a literacy class at the local adult education centre, and the play shows well the embarrassment the students feel on revealing their plight. There is George, formerly a shop assistant, now homeless after his wife and daughter left for Australia; Thelma, from Northampton, working as a nanny for a wealthy family; and finally Kevin, the stand-in caretaker, who disguises his illiteracy longer than the other two.

Townsend depicts well and entertainingly the prickly interaction between these stereotyped characters, and the agonising effect the written word has on them, notably the letters that George receives from his daughter but can’t read. The group becomes a metaphor for class conflict between the resentful disadvantaged, without education or jobs, and the successful (and employed) middle classes.
